John Schultz is an attorney with combined law firm and consulting experience in compensation and employee benefits for the corporate and governmental sectors. John provides a full range of compensation and benefit services to clients across industries.
John has developed, drafted, administered and provided on-going consulting services for employee and executive compensation and benefits programs, including non-qualified deferred compensation plans, severance pay plans, supplemental retirement plans, 401(k) plans, employee stock ownership plans, cafeteria plans and VEBAs, employee agreements, and qualified and non-qualified stock plans. John has coordinated employee benefit issues in connection with numerous mergers and acquisitions, including analysis of golden parachute issues, employment agreement/change in control payments, and other potential benefit plan liabilities. John has also assisted many organizations with benchmarking, designing and implementing compensation structures (both executive compensation as well as broad-based compensation), including base salary, bonus structures and long-term incentive plans. Finally, John has provided litigation support services in connection with executive compensation matters, including reasonable compensation analysis, and has provided expert witness testimony on executive compensation.
Prior to founding Compensation & Benefit Solutions, LLC, John was partner-in-charge of KPMG’s Denver Compensation and Benefits practice. In 2006, when KPMG divested its Compensation and Benefits practice to Smart Business Advisory and Consulting, LLC, John became the practice leader of Smart’s Denver Compensation and Benefits practice, as well as the national partner-in-charge of the Executive Compensation practice for the firm.
Earlier, John was the practice leader for the Denver Compensation and Benefits practice of Deloitte and Touche, LLP, where he also focused on executive compensation, and in addition oversaw a small retirement plan administration practice. Prior to that, John was employed by the legal group of a large human resource consulting firm, working on all aspects of employee benefits.
John is a frequent speaker at various seminars sponsored by the Colorado Bar Association, Financial Executives Institute, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Western Pension & Benefits Conference, to name a few.
John earned a B.S. in Finance from the University of Florida, a Juris Doctor from the Florida State University College of Law, and a LL.M. in taxation from the University of Denver. John is licensed to practice law in Colorado and Florida, and is a member of the Colorado, Denver, and Florida Bar Associations. John is also a member of the Western Pension & Benefits Conference, and a former steering committee member of the Denver Chapter.
John has made it a habit, since moving to Denver from south Florida many years ago, of taking advantage of the many outdoor activities Colorado has to offer, including biking, skiing, and climbing. After learning on some of Colorado’s alpine climbs, John was successful in summiting Mount Rainier in Washington State, as well as both Mount Blanc and the Matterhorn in the Alps. More recently, however, John’s mountaineering has been confined to simpler ascents, generally limited to pulling one of his three children up a sledding hill or trying to keep up with them on black diamond trails at Breckenridge.
